365 Challenge Day 258 – Running! Again!

7 Apr

I went running again today, wow, two days in a row!! Today was much more enjoyable, the temperature milder. I ran for 30 minutes, with a few minutes of walking in the middle. I was so excited and so proud of myself that I had a thought of doing it every day! Okay, I can be a little overly enthusiastic: ) But afterward when I cooled off I quickly realized that would be a bad idea. My shins, heels, and arches are not happy. Better have a couple of days of resting and stretching before I go again.

365 Challenge Day 257 – Running!!

7 Apr

FINALLY!! When was the last time I went running? Don’t even remember but it’s been months! In past years I have walked or ran outside almost all winter. I fondly remember going for a lunchtime run with my co-worker during a snowstorm, only to get back and find the office had closed because of a weather emergency! But not this winter, oh no. It was just too cold! Months and months of temperatures in the teens or even single digits. And even worse than the cold the icy trails. Nothing was melting so all the sidewalks and paths stayed covered with snow and ice the whole winter!

Finally, a run outside. Hurray! Well, actually, it was still friggin’ cold. I started off pretty annoyed and uncomfortable. But once I got moving I warmed up and by the end was enjoying the brisk air and sunshine.

365 Challenge Day 204 – Running

5 Jan

Not sure why, but I really couldn’t sleep last night.  It might just be that my body is still off from New Year’s Eve when I stayed up until 3:00ish am.  I’ve been up late and then sleeping in a bit every since.  I really thought I’d sleep well last night after having such an active day!!  But no, I ended up taking a half dose of Benadryl at around 1:30, and slept until 10:30.  Meaning, another day without going to yoga!  It felt so weird.

I met a friend for lunch, and bought (yes, BOUGHT) some falafel.  I’m not sure if eating out should be allowed or not during my three months of “not buying it”, but I did want to see my friend, and that’s what we agreed to do, and it was only $7…  I am definitely going to try to keep eating out to a minimum during these months.  But I also am not willing to completely sacrifice my social life.  So there it is, I’ve just decided what the rule should be.  I can eat out or buy coffee at a cafe if it is for social reasons, but not just out of laziness or lack of planning.

I missed the gym which closes early on Sundays, and so I did something I haven’t done in a while, I went for a run!  I don’t usually go at night, but I live right on a main road that’s well lit and has lots of traffic so it feels safe.  I wouldn’t go on a bike path at night, too remote.  I ran at a leisurely pace for a full 30 minutes!  In the rain!  Kind of badass, huh? It felt great! And I did some good stretching afterward.

Tomorrow the kids and I have all agreed we will go to the gym!!!  (along with all other members who have made the New Year’s Resolution?)

365 Challenge Day 178 – Running

5 Dec

I went running on the treadmill at work today.  It was good, but strange!!  I was very worried that if I got distracted for a second, like to turn and see who the person coming towards me might be, that I’d go flying off the thing!!  I mean, when you are running on the ground outside, you can slow down, speed up, turn around, run backwards, run in a diagonal, all without having to worry about falling over.  The things we take for granted!!  It took me about five minutes to figure out what my pace should be, I had no idea how many miles an hour I run and I couldn’t do the algebra in my head to figure it out.  Anyway, it’s not my favorite, but it was a good alternative to either running outside in the freezing slush, or skipping it completely!

365 Challenge Day 169 – Active

16 Nov

It was a gorgeous, sunny, unexpectedly warm day.  Sixty one degrees!!  Not bad for mid-November in New England!  The autumn leaves were spectacular!

I had the day off for a holiday, and I immediately thought of three things I wanted to do: yoga, running, and Zumba!  It struck me that if that’s my idea of a perfect day I must be a pretty active person!!  But realistically I knew I’d only make it to two out of the three.  I chose running, because it was so beautiful and I wanted to be outside.  And because my kids told me I was in a grumpy mood so I figured I could use some endorphins : )  I also chose yoga.  It was a one hour class, which was perfect, and I did a lot better than I thought I would after the run!  I felt strong!  Oh well, I would have loved to go to Zumba too.  Maybe someday I’ll be able to do all three!

I’m not running faster, or further, or more easily.  But I am running more often!  I went three times this week.  And I really enjoy it!! Progress.

I also did some cooking.  I made a quick and easy vegan corn chowder with sauteed onions and celery, canned corn, diced potatoes, unsweetened almond milk, bay leaves, and chickenless bullion.  Yum!  Okay, okay.  Let’s keep it real.  I also made some grilled cod with garlic and olive oil for my son, but he wouldn’t eat it.  Since I haven’t been vegan lately I happily ate it.  I actually added some to the corn chowder and made it fish chowder!  It was delicious!

365 Challenge Day 167 – Running

15 Nov

It was a brisk and sunny day in New England.  My friend asked to meet me for a walk around the pond which was perfect, that’s what I wanted to do too!!  But I brought my running gear, and even though I was up until 3am at a concert, I went for a 2.5 mile run after our 2.5 mile walk!!

Today was a reminder that having the right gear can be so important.  The sports bras that I have are really cheap, and really old, I mean probably less than $15 and decades old.  When I would go running, or even go to Zumba, I would wear two of them, AND a leotard on top, to hold everything in.  And I’d still be sore afterward.  Well, today I finally invested in a good running bra.  Oh. My. God.  What a difference!!!  It was almost $60, which was really hard for me accept.  But I never knew running could be so comfortable!!!

Also got a lot of cleaning and organizing done this weekend.  I was so behind after spending all last weekend at the yoga teacher training.  So I had about two weeks worth of laundry and clutter to deal with!!  Didn’t make it to yoga today, but it was a good day!  Very satisfying!

365 Challenge Day 163 – Running

10 Nov

I ran at work during my lunch hour.  Now that I’ve ended my daily yoga challenge I’m enjoying having days where I do something else instead.  There is a really nice path along a river outside of my office.  It’s short, but nice.  It’s probably on one mile, so I make a couple of trips back and forth.  There is even a family of swans I’ve been watching grow up since the baby swans (swanlings?) were tiny!

It felt so awesome to use my lunch hour to go running!!  Since I can only run for about 20 or 25 minutes, and it kicks my butt, it’s the perfect exercise to do when I only have one hour to change, stretch and workout.  Even though there is a nice fitness room at the office I do like being outside better than in the gym.  I mean, look at those swans!!

Of course, this coincided with the day I decided to give up coffee again to see if it would help my skin clear up.  Grrrr…  I drank LOTS of green tea.  And I survived.  I’m also on a kitchari cleanse again.

365 Challenge Day 153 – Yoga, again!

27 Oct

Went to class again!!  Today was the last day of my unlimited pass, I definitely got my money’s worth out of it!!

AND, I went for a run!!  The fact that I was able to go to class and go for a run on the same day is huge progress, means my endurance is definitely improving.  And the run was amazing.  Before I had been using this app called Map My Run.  It was great to measure my speed and distance.  BUT, what I hadn’t realized is I think I was pushing myself to run a little a faster than my comfortable pace.  Today I didn’t use the app, I just ran at a slow and comfortable pace, and instead of usual two miles, I went two and a half!  AND with less strain.

I also went on a HUGE decluttering spree.  OMG.  I can’t believe how much stuff I got rid of!!  Boxes and boxes of papers and junk.  I think my inner minimalist is finally finding her way to the surface!!  I have empty shelves, empty storage boxes, I don’t know what do with them!  Don’t get me wrong, I still have a lot of stuff to sort through!!  But I’m making progress : )

365 Challenge Day 131 – Revolution

30 Sep

40 Days to Personal Revolution – Day 21
Opted for a run around the pond on this gorgeous day, instead of going to yoga class. First time I’ve missed class given the choice. No regrets! Did 40 minutes at home instead. Will try to go tomorrow.

I’ve definitely lost some stamina from not running for several weeks.  But it felt really great to be outside and work my lungs and heart!  I hope to go again soon.

365 Challenge Day 74 – Running

4 Aug

Bummer.  I ran my two miles today, came in under 10 minute miles for both, all felt great, but now my back is sore.  Really sore.  I’m icing it and took some ibuprofen.  It’s so frustrating!!  I know I need to just admit that running isn’t good for me, stick to yoga and the elliptical, and throw in the towel!!  It’s strange though, it always feels fine while I’m running, and then hurts when I’m sitting.  Maybe it’s actually sitting that’s the problem.  I’m confused…  Probably need to start PT again. Ugh.
