365 Challenge Day 116 – Revolution

40 Days to Personal Revolution – Day 6
YOGA: Back at my studio! Thank goodness! I really missed it there when I was in DC. I missed the heat, the teachers, the flow, the emphasis on drishti, ujjiyi and the bandhas, I missed it all! It’s good to be home! Can’t wait to go again tomorrow!
MEDITATION: Will try to do 20 minutes before I sleep, which will be soon, I’m beat!
FOOD: I went to a Kirtan tonight at some friends’ house, it was really nice. They cooked up a big batch of kitchari, YUM! It may have had some ghee, so probably not 100% vegan, but it was a chance I was willing to take : ) I’m going to try to cook some this weekend, so I’ll have it to eat all week!


JOURNALING: Probably not tonight, maybe this weekend.


DECLUTTERING: I took a huge garbage bag of clothes and stuff out of my house today, BUT, it’s still in my car, so I still can’t count it, but I’m making progress! I also found about 10 bottles of expired sunblock in a box in my daughter’s room, so I threw them all away. This was a little upsetting because it was probably about $100 worth of sunblock! But some of it looked like it could easily be a decade old. Have no idea how it ended up there!

365 Challenge Day 55 – Kitchari!

Last night I cooked up a big pot of kitchari, and I’m very excited.

Kitchari is a simple Indian dish, often used for cleansing or balancing the system.  It is easy to make, and easy to digest.  It is a one-pot meal, with the rice, beans, vegetables, and mild spices all cooked together.  It is very balanced and can be eaten exclusively for days, or even weeks, if doing a cleanse.

Recipes vary, and can be adapted to taste, or depending on what ingredients are on hand.  This week mine has: brown basmati rice, red lentils, cauliflower, and peas, all organic, of course : )  Flavored with olive oil, turmeric, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, ginger, and salt.  It turned out even tastier than I thought it would!  Yum!  It is also delicious with coconut mild cooked in.  I often add spinach and then top it with fresh cilantro which makes it even richer in vitamins and minerals, and more delicious!

Even when I’m not doing a cleanse, I love making up a big pot and then just taking a break from cooking, or worrying about what to eat.  This way I can also focus on cooking something for my kids and not eating something I don’t want (pasta!) or not having to prepare three separate meals!

On the opposite end of the spectrum, after my healthy lunch, I had a sweet and unhealthy treat.  I have mentioned before that I am pretty much off sugar with the exception of sweetened soy milk for my coffee or tea.  Well, today I got a green tea Frappuccino from Starbucks, and even though I asked for no extra sweetener, it was disgustingly sweet.  The soy milk is sweetened.  The matcha (powdered green tea) is sweetened.  And I’m pretty convinced they ignored my request and added more sugar anyway.  I feel really grossed out that I drank it.  I think I need to ban myself from Starbucks…

365 Challenge Day 54 – Nature

I’m exhausted!  Not sleeping well for several nights in a row.  Driving for more than 12 hours yesterday and the day before.  To be blunt, I feel like crap.  I may also be fighting something off, I’m feeling really run down.  My whole body aches.

I had been vaguely hoping to run tonight, but opted for a walk instead, and I felt so much better afterward.  It was muggy and hot, but it was great to be outside, and it even started to sprinkle, which was delightful!!  (If it had been a full out rain causing water damage to my iPhone, I would have been much less delighted : )

Many of my nature-loving friends probably would not consider this pond in the middle of the city much of an escape, but this about as much nature as this City Girl needs : )  It was absolutely beautiful.

And, despite feeling so tired, I managed to cook two separate meals tonight, shrimp fried rice and sauteed broccoli for my kids; and for myself: a big pot of vegan kitchari.  I’m kind of obsessed with kitchari.  I’ll do a separate post about it another time : )
