365 Challenge Day 141 – Strength

40 Days to Personal Revolution – Day 31
Yoga: I had such an amazing class tonight.  I felt so strong and present!  After being sick last week, and then doing the fruit cleanse over the weekend, it has been a while since I’ve been able to work this hard in class.  Really locked into the bandhas, focused on the breath, and felt solid in plank.  It felt great!  For the first time in a while I was really able to notice how going to class consistently has made me stronger.
Meditation: did 20 minutes at work on my lunch hour.  Probably would have gone for a walk instead today, but it was raining out!
Food:  Oh man, when I got out of yoga class I wanted to eat everything in sight.  I wanted to go to an all you can eat sushi buffet (Maki Maki) and gorge on REAL sushi.  I had a little battle with a can of tuna fish at home.  But, in the end I cooked up some black beans and brown rice with garlic, onions and spice.  Had some salad.  Had some curried veggies.  And a piece of gluten-free onion naan.  Not my most delicious meal ever, but I feel good I resisted the fish.

365 Challenge Day 140 – Revolution

40 Days to Personal Revolution – Day 30
Only 10 days left? The end of the program feels near!
Yoga: 40 minutes of gentle stretched and core exercises at home. Didn’t procrastinate tonight, but was so busy couldn’t start until after 10pm.
Meditation: will do some before I sleep.
FOOD! After my three-day fruit and veggie fast everything I ate was very exciting today. Steel cut oats with walnuts, craisins, and golden raisins. Red lentil dahl, and curried vegetables. Oh yeah, and three cups of coffee… Green tea, right out the window!

365 Challenge Day 139 – Revolution

40 Days to Personal Revolution – Day 29

Today was my third and last day of the fruit and vegetable fast.  It went great!  I definitely felt tired, and a little weak, but strong enough and energetic enough to go for a long walk with a friend and make it to a 90 minute class of hot yoga.  Not sure if tomorrow I’ll switch back to coffee, or stick to the green tea for a bit longer.

Tonight for dinner I had two bowls of blended zucchini soup, and a salad with cucumber, tomato, a shredded carrot, and a half of an avocado.  Believe it or not I feel completely full and satisfied!!  It’s amazing.

I spent a good portion of the yoga class thinking about the rice and beans I’ll get to eat tomorrow : )  So as soon as I got home I cooked up a huge pot of red lentil dahl, and of sauteed cabbage, carrots and cauliflower with turmeric and ginger.  It’s going to taste sooooooo  good.

365 Challenge Day 138 – Cleanse

40 Days to Personal Revolution- Day 28

In the fourth week of the 40 Day program, there is a 3-day fruit fast.  I didn’t have any intention of doing it, since my friends and I are all just doing the program in a very unstructured way and adapting as we like.  I also don’t think having just fruit is necessarily that healthy because that’s a lot of sugar.  But yesterday I realized I was going to have an extremely mellow weekend, with not much planned, and I’m just coming off a cold from last week, so I spontaneously decided to go ahead and do it.  Except I’m having mostly vegetables and a little fruit.  The funny thing is I didn’t even realize the fruit fast was in the fourth week, I had thought it was later in the program.

I actually started yesterday.  Here is what my day looked like:

Morning – Green tea (with a little soy milk); a big green smoothie with spinach, celery, strawberries, banana, and some chia seeds (they really help cut the hunger.)
Midday – A blended carrot soup with carrots, celery, onion, garlic, and one potato, boiled with salt, pepper sage and bay leaves.
Evening – baked spaghetti squash served with fresh parsley, salt and pepper. 
Snacks – more green tea, a couple of bananas. 

The day went really well yesterday, and I felt fine!  Didn’t get hungry.

Today so far I’ve had:

Morning – a smoothie with a banana, almond milk and some green tea matcha and some chia 
Midday – a blended mushroom soup with baby portabella mushrooms, onions, garlic, celery, sage, salt, pepper, and a little almond milk for creaminess.  It was delicious!!  I also had a tiny bit of sliced avocado and tomato. 

But today I’m really dragging.  I feel tired.  In yoga class this morning I felt like my body was filled with wet cement!!  The 90 minutes felt like 2 hours!!  And I think the green tea I had in the morning was nothing compared the two cups of coffee I usually drink before a 9am class.  But I’m sure it was really great for me to sweat in the hot yoga class during this detox.

But I don’t feel hungry, and I don’t feel unsatisfied.  It feels really great to be eating this way this weekend.  I bought a bunch of fruits and veggies to make more green smoothies and more hot veggie soups.


365 Challenge Day 137 – Baptiste!!

40 Days to Personal Revolution – Day 27

So for the last 27 days, some friends and I have been going through Baron Baptiste’s book, 40 Days to Personal Revolution.  My main focus has been on daily yoga, daily silent meditation, and healthy eating.  Other friends are focusing a lot on journaling as well.  Anyway, I went to yoga class today, and guess who was in the back row of the class: Baron Baptiste!!!  He’s in town doing a workshop and was just there taking class.  I talked to him afterward and told him that I was doing his program with some friends around the world, he was thrilled!!  It was a fun surprise.
Yoga: Hour of Power class at the studio. My body felt great, strong. (Although my mind was pretty distracted having Baron in the back row : )
Meditation: I paid the price for my late night yesterday. Twenty minutes of meditation at 9pm, and I could barely keep from dozing off!! I think I stayed mostly conscious though, I felt the twenty minutes pass, in fact, felt kind of long.
Food: made a simple, healthy, yummy carrot soup with celery, onion, garlic, one potato, sage, bay leaves, salt and pepper. I just boiled everything and then blended it. It really hit the spot. I almost never cook fat-free, but I wanted something light.

Decluttering: Okay, I have a problem. Evidence suggests I am a food hoarder. My freezer is completely packed to the top. The stuff on top is all good stuff, some frozen Indian food for my son, frozen berries for my smoothies, black bean burgers for my daughter. And I know there are some bags of peas in there. But I have no idea what’s underneath and behind those things. I hope to find out this weekend.

365 Challenge Day 136 – Revolution

40 Days to Personal Revolution Day 26

Shoot, I really procrastinated on starting my yoga tonight.  This is the first time I have put it off like this.  I may regret this in the morning, but I had really great yoga AND meditation sessions from 11:40pm to 1am.
Yoga: I did 40 minutes at home. Usually when I do this I take it pretty easy, I do gentle stretches, a lot of supine twists : ) But tonight, even though it was late, I was inspired to work on some strength. I went straight into dolphin and side planks, scorpion pose, head stand, some standing balancing poses, and lots and lots and LOTS of core. I probably did four times as many ab exercises as I usually do. The fact that I could do that many take a break, and do more, tells me that I don’t usually do enough!!
Meditation: I felt pretty energized after my yoga, so I decided to do 20 minutes of silent meditation. It was really great. I felt very centered and quiet.

365 Challenge Day 135 – Revolution

40 Days to Personal Revolution Day 25
Yoga: 90 minutes of hot yoga. Class felt really good except that my right hamstring got so tight! Not sure if it’s cramping up or what. I was in class with a friend of mine.  He is a yoga teacher and in amazing shape.  His mat was right next to mine and I couldn’t help admire how strong he was!!  He made the poses look so effortless.  In warrior two his thigh was completely parallel to the floor.  In side plank he easy raised his top leg and seemed solid in his balance.  It was inspiring.  Made me realize even though I’ve been going consistently I haven’t really been focusing on getting stronger for a while.
Food: my first cheat since I started being vegan again. I cooked some fish for my son and I was really hungry, so I ended up having a piece. Have to admit it was good.

365 Challenge Day 134 – Revolution

40 Days to Personal Revolution – Day 24
Yoga: 90 minutes of hot yoga. Blissful : )  I recently read that sweating releases endorphins.  That explains A LOT.  No wonder I’m so blissful by the end of class and so addicted to my hot yoga!!
Meditation: 20 minutes at work in my lunch hour, it was a nice break : )
Food: soft tacos with refried beans, vegan cheese, avo, corn salsa, mango salsa, and cabbage. Yum!

365 Challenge Day 133 – Revolution

40 Days to Personal Revolution – Day 23 –
40 minutes of yoga at home, focusing on releasing pressure and tension in my lower back. It was late before I could get started, almost 10pm, and I felt a little sense of dread, but of course I was really glad I did it and my back feels a lot better.

On another topic, I went into my bathroom tonight and it smelled funky!  (Not the good kind of funky.)  I looked around and noticed I had dumped my yoga stuff on the floor yesterday after class.  Up until now I’ve been really good at doing laundry every single day.  Well, even though it had only been 24 hours, the stuff stank!  I put it all in the laundry with an extra long cycle, hot water, two capfuls of laundry detergent, and a box of baking soda.  Wish me luck!!  Hope it comes out smelling normal!!

365 Challenge Day 132 – Revolution

40 Days to Personal Revolution – Day 22
Yoga- was tempted to skip again today and just stay outside, but wanted to keep my momentum going so I went and had a great 90 minute class!! Also walked around Fresh Pond : )

Meditation: will do some before I sleep (but have a feeling it will be less than 20)
Food: Got about five basil plants from my mom and I’m making vegan pesto! Yum! Kids both love it!

Decluttering: I did quite a bit of cleaning this weekend and got rid of a bunch of stuff (well, it’s still in my car, but at least it’s out of my house!)
Overall it was a good weekend!
