365 Challenge Day 261 – Yoga: Water

In our yoga teacher training our teachers have talked about the elements, and how they relate to doing yoga.  Water relates to the joints.  There is a fluidity that is very important to bring to yoga, a softness.  This may seem obvious but can often be overlooked when people think the important point is to “get the leg straight” or “touch the heel to the floor”, or some such thing, and lock into the joints.  Locking the joints puts the weight of the pose into the joint, which weakens them, when instead we want the weight to be in the bones and the muscles, which strengthens them.  So bend those knees!!  Just a little.  Leave the joints soft.
