365 Challenge Day 218 – Yoga: Pelvis

24 Jan

My yoga teachers are constantly talking about the pelvis.  One of my friends who went there for a few months will jokingly ask me, How was your pelvis class?  I feel like I’m just scratching the surface in understanding the importance and the nuances of the positioning in the postures.

The pelvis is connected to the lower spine, and connected to the hips, which in turn are connected to the legs.  They all affect each other.  You can’t move the legs without it affecting the pelvis, and you can’t move the pelvis without it affecting the spine.

One pose I’ve changed a lot is Warrior One.  I used to tilt my pelvis down in the pose, which would arch the back, and also compress the hips a bit.  It felt natural because it felt like a good back bend.  But now I’m trying it with the pelvis in a more neutral position.  This also puts the lower spine in a neutral position and opens the hip joints instead of compressing them.  The reaching up and arching back happens more in the upper back, not the lower.

Other poses that I’m really paying attention to the alignment of the pelvis are Crescent Lunge, Eagle, Utkatasana, and Triangle.

Stay tuned for more!
